Obituary of Martha Hartzog Andrews

Martha Hartzog Andrews, 78, wife of Ed Andrews, died Sunday, September 26, 2021, at her home. Born to Quillie Frank and Anna Reeves Hartzog, on January 14, 1943, in Reevesville, South Carolina, as the middle of five children. She was proud of her farm upbringing picking cotton, hanging tobacco, and helping with hog killings. She graduated from St. George High School and she moved to Sumter to study cosmetology. She met Ed at Phillips Shoe Shop and ended up with a pair of shoes and a date with the handsome shoe salesman. The result was a loving and successful marriage of nearly 59 years. Martha and Ed settled in Hanahan where Ed worked at the Charleston Shipyard. Martha worked 30 years as a rural letter carrier. In 2020 they moved back to Sumter to be closer to their daughter. They were faithful members of Highland Park Baptist, often being there Sunday morning as well as Wednesday night. She loved her Sunday school class, the WMU and her Circle. Martha and Ed raised three children: Denise, Becky (Tim) and Tommy (Kim). All of the children and grandchildren are active in church, a fact Martha probably considers her proudest contribution. While raising children and helping with grandchildren, Martha always approached life with a sense of wonder and joy. She took her children to Spoleto events and traveled widely with them. She dearly loved her husband, children, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Ed Andrews; daughter, Becky Wilson (Tim); son, Tom Andrews (Kim); seven grandchildren; a sister, Edith Ruple (Horace), and brother, Franklin Hartzog (Judy), both of Ridgeville. She is joining her parents, daughter, and two brothers in heaven. Graveside services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Thursday in Carolina Memorial Gardens in North Charleston with Rev.
