Obituary of Daniel Edward Hughes
Please share a memory of Daniel to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Daniel Hughes was 90 years old when he passed away on a Tuesday the 24th of May, 2022. What a wonderful God focused life he lived. Saved at age 13, Jesus was his rock, his guide, and his strength. The Wednesday before his death he said that the Lord was calling him home. That is how close of a relationship he had with God.
Daniel was born and raised in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains of Kentucky in an area called Pete’s Hollow. A rough and tough boy, he always was in search of the next great adventure. He was the second of 13 children, preceded in death by Victor, Bill, Fred, Dorothy, Jeanette, Loretta, and Alma Gay. He is survived by Ralph, Betty, Don, Patty, and Joyce. His surviving children are Kathy, Rosanna, Randy, Ronda, and Mary Jane and a very long list of nieces, nephews, and cousins (as you can imagine). His grandchildren loved him very much and his great-grandchildren got to know him very well. A blessing not many of us experience. They all knew him as a very godly man and he always had a verse of scripture on his tongue. He was kind and gentle with a subtle wit that would make you giggle even hours later.
Daniel loved to sing hymns and all who knew him would always ask him for a song. His singing was remarkable, even into his eighties and on his birthday when he turned 90 he sang praises to God. His father, Estill Hughes, was a preacher and was his guide to finding Jesus at a young age. His dad was first a preacher in Kentucky, but later moved to Ann Arbor, MI where he conducted a radio broadcast question and answer program. His mother, Olive (Nunemaker) Hughes was a very loving, nurturing woman who Daniel would say, “Knew how to keep her flock in line.” One method was a funny story of how she would have him chase down and catch a chicken so she could fix it for dinner, but no matter which chicken he brought her, it was always, “her favorite chicken and she could not bear to eat that one.” So she would keep sending him after another one, then another one, until he was too worn out to chase any more. He would always share stories of his childhood and his parents and you could tell he had a loving relationship with them both.
His greatest love of all was his Lord and savior Jesus. Always longing and ready to share the Gospel with all he met. We can and should learn from his example and pick up the mantle of the love Jesus has for us all. John 15:13
