As many of you here know Sharon and I have been synonymous with each other our entire lives.
I was 1 year younger, and she was always my ‘Alpha Sister’ (and I’m not talking about a sorority).
Sharon and I bonded over the years, giving each other strength, by being the survivors of a number of hardships. We lost both of our parents while still in our teens, and our brother to cancer having just turned 60.
Sharon was always there for me, guiding and mentoring me, and sometimes fussing at me. When times were difficult, I leaned on her great wisdom. No matter where I was in the world, Sharon would always find me. Sometimes I’d be far away and choose not to bother her, but she could sense if something was wrong and once even got the Red Cross to track me down. I needed her beyond words at that time, and as always, she found me instead.
She and Kelly took me and my son into her home when I went through the most difficult time of my life in Germany.
She was with me for the birth of my son, Chris, and was our family throughout the rest of my life. Sharon loved Chris just like her own and was present at every event of his life that she could.
Chris knew her not as ‘Aunt Sharon’, but ‘Mommy Sharon’ which he still calls her today. She always remarked that Chris was more like her than me so, she was claiming him as hers.
Sharon and I laughed, cried, and loved being silly together our entire lives, but she would always knock me over the head if she thought I needed it. When we weren’t together, we shared our lives by email, calls, and texts. We always had a strange ability to sense if one of us needed the other.
Sharon and I would talk over the years, especially during the last 4 years she was ill and had lost her husband. I would put my blue tooth on to call her on one of my walks as I knew we’d be on the phone for hours. – She loved to reminisce about Kelly, and talk about her grandson, Caden, whom she called: the delight of her life.
Sharon called me from the hospital at 1 am last Wednesday morning. I was in Arizona. We talked for an hour. Most of what she said seemed lucid, but stressed, and we even laughed some. Our parting words were: ‘I love you, Sharon.’ She replied, ‘I love you too, Hope’. And we ended our last call.
By a miracle, I was able to move my flight up to Wednesday. I then drove 3-1/2 hours, stuck in traffic with the hospital in sight. But I made it there to hold her hand as she died. The nurses said she waited on me to die.
I will truly miss you, Sharon.
Your sister, Hope

I only met Sharon through her daughter, Susan when she and Kelly moved to Lexington. What a wonderful couple. I know that Sharon and Kelly shared a joyous reunion when she left us, but those she left behind have a huge emptiness where she had filled our hearts with love. To Susan, Caden, Phillip, Sharon's sister, dear friends and all her family, both by blood and by choice, I hope you find some solace in the many wonderful memories you shared with this remarkable woman. Rest in peace Sharon!

My heart goes out to Sharon's sister, children, and grandchildren, whom she loved so dearly.
Sharon and I met when we were eleven years old, and she was my best friend ever since. She was a huge part of my life, and what a time we had together!
The motion picture industry must have made a fortune on the two of us alone. As teenagers, we scavenged and sold empty drink bottles for money to go see movies we loved many times over. We saw "Souind of Music" at least twelve times before Sharon's mother exclaimed to her, "I'm going to have your head examined!"
We had many sleepovers, although Sharon could not sleep well at my house because it was too dark and quiet, and I couldn't sleep well at her place because it was too bright and noisy outside; so we just talked and laughed all .night. We often ate meals at each other's homes; she loved my mother's ice tea, and her mom cooked the best fried chicken in the world. We listened to rock and roll music and danced. On some days we climbed to the roof of the Raffield Arms apartment building and looked out over Sumter. And our antics at the beach are another whole story.
We talked about everything, we philosophised, and we dreamed. When we grew up, got married, and lived in different cities, we drifted apart somewhat, but we still kept in touch and got together when possible. We really enjoyed those New Year's Eve parties at Shaw AFB--thank you, Hope!
Sharon and I finally fulfilled one of our dreams in 2010 when we traveled together to Los Angeles and went on a cruise (we met and shook hands with Russell Crowe!).
These memories are only drops in the huge bucket of adventures, good times, and sad times Sharon and I had. I love you, my "frined" (an accidental misspelling she found in my fifth grade notebook and never let me forget it), and I will miss you greatly.

Linda, that is so heartwarming, and the epitome of your two lives together. And yes, I was included in much of that as the tag-along meddling sister. Thank you for those heart-felt, true words for Sharon and yes, you two were always inseparable and kindred spirits. Hope

I worked with Sharon for 9 years at Southern Bell in Sumter. She was a sweet, kind lady with a great personality. She was great fun at Bell reunions. My deepest sympathy to the family and may the Lord wrap his arms around you. Mary VandenHeuvel
