Obituary of Julia Talley
Please share a memory of Julia to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Julia Motte Lawrence Talley, 95, widow of Marshall Talley, died Saturday, July 8, 2023, peacefully at her home.
Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Julius Motte Lawrence and Lillie Nay Harrison Lawrence.
Mrs. Talley was a graduate of Edmunds High School, Winthrop College, and Stanford University School of Physical Therapy. She worked at the Woodrow Rehabilitation Center in Virginia where she met and married her husband of sixty years Marshall Talley. They raised their family and happily resided in Sumter the remainder of their lives. She was an active member of First Baptist Church where she taught Adult Sunday School for many years.
Julia taught Anatomy and Physiology at the Tuomey Hospital School of Nursing until it closed. She later taught science and chemistry at Furman High School and then taught sixth grade at Alice Drive Elementary School until Wilson Hall was established. She was one of the original six teachers at Wilson Hall where she retired.
She served on the board of the Salvation Army and Wilson Hall and was a charter member of the fun Tuesday/Thursday Club.
Julia will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She cherished the times spent together with her family at Santee and the beach.
Surviving are two sons, Lynn Talley (Donna) and Motte Talley and a daughter, Carol Talley (Al); four grandchildren, Lauren, Sarah Lynn, Rebecca, and Will Talley; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a beloved son, Kevin Talley.
The family would like to thank Amedisys Hospice, Visiting Angels and especially Al Gibson for the wonderful, compassionate care they provided Mrs. Talley.
Graveside services will be held at 11 A.M. Wednesday in the Sumter Cemetery with Dr. Bob Calvert officiating.
