Obituary of Donald Lee Curlovic

Donald Lee Curlovic, 85, died Tuesday, September 12, 2023, at NHC of Sumter. Born January 6, 1938 in Alton, IL, he was a son of the late Anthony and Marian Gerber Curlovic. Don graduated from Marquette High School. He attended the University of Notre Dame, receiving his bachelor’s degree in 1960. He earned a Master’s degree in mathematics from Washington University in St. Louis and a PHD in mathematics from Indiana University. Dr. Curlovic’s teaching career spanned several states: University of Evansville, Indiana; Diné College, Navajo Nation, Arizona; and the University of South Carolina Sumter, from which he retired in 2000 as Distinguished Professor Emeritus. In Sumter, Don was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church, serving as Lector and Eucharistic Minister, and as an active member of the Knights of Peter Claver He served on the School Board for the former St. Jude High School for a number of years. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Peggy Curlovic; his son, David Curlovic (Dawn); his daughter, Susan Werner (Joe); his sister, Jane Fin (Louis); three grandchildren, Jack and Kate Werner and Ashlin Farmer; his nephew, Jeff Fin (Bernadette); three nieces, Julie Bauer (Stephen), Sara Malczewski and Mary Lou Taul (Matt); great nieces and nephews and many cousins. Memorial Services will be held at 10 A.M. Monday, September 18, 2023, at St. Anne & St. Jude Roman Catholic Church, 1855 Beckwood Road, Sumter with Father Ronie Lorcha, CRM officiating. The family will receive friends at the church following the memorial service. Private burial will be held in the Sumter Cemetery.
