Obituary of Betty Jean Hollingsworth

Betty Jean (BJ) Hollingsworth, 85, a resident of The Harmony Collection in Columbia, SC, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, August 31, 2024. Born in Sumter, SC on October 1, 1938, she was a daughter of the late Moise Outlaw, formerly of Santee, SC, and the late Mabel K. “Sutton” Johnson formerly of Columbia, SC. Raised in Sumter, SC, she was a graduate of Edmunds High School. Betty is survived by her children; Bambi L. “Boykin” Bailey (Bruce), of Cape Coral, FL and David J. Hollingsworth of Evansville, IN; five grandchildren, Kari L. Bailey of Columbia, SC, Kayla L, Bailey of Sarasota, FL, Kevin L. Bailey of Gonzales, LA, Kaden L. Bailey of Columbia, SC, Abigail L. Hollingsworth of Evansville, IN; and one great-grandchild, Myles Hollingsworth of Evansville, IN. Betty was preceded in death by her younger brother, Marion “Bud” Outlaw formerly of Greensboro, NC. Betty was a travel consultant and owned her own travel agency for 42 years in Indianapolis. Betty loved traveling and journeyed to many countries including Africa, China, Russia, and Australia. Betty also loved cruises and sailed and completed over 60 cruises in her lifetime. Betty treasured spending time with her family. She cherished the more than 40 years of Outlaw family reunions. Betty loved reading, bowling, playing board games and dancing to the shag (The South Carolina State Dance). Betty was kind, caring and loving; adored by all that knew her and will be missed by her family and friends dearly. Memorial Services will be held at 12 PM Sunday, October 13, 2024, at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 11 AM to 12 PM Sunday, October 13, 2024, at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Sumter Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Betty asked that memorials be made to your favorite charity in her name.
