Obituary of Janis Helen Walton Moley

Please share a memory of Janis to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Janis Helen Walton Moley, died peacefully on July 25, 2024, in New York at age 94. A native of Sumter and scion of the Commanders, one of the city’s oldest families, Janis was born on Christmas Day in 1929. She was schooled in Sumter, participated in numerous beauty pageants in her youth, and went on to graduate from Converse College in Spartanburg. While working as a schoolteacher in Sumter, she met her future husband, Dr. Malcolm Moley, at the Officer’s Club at Shaw Air Force Base during the Korean War. Much to the dismay of her many suitors in Sumter, she moved to NYC after her marriage while her husband, a surgeon, embarked on a long and successful medical career. Despite living in New York for 70 years, she never lost her “twang” or her connection to Sumter and her family; her southern charm and sense of humor was a blessing to everyone in her family, north and south, and will be sorely missed. Janis and Mal summered in Quogue, NY, where they socialized with many wonderful friends. She is survived by her son Roger Moley, daughter Janis McCarthy, nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband as well as a son, Dr. Jeffrey Moley. A graveside burial service will be held in the Sumter Cemetery on Saturday, February 1 at 11 a.m., all are welcome. On-line condolences may be sent to www.sumterfunerals.com Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home & Crematory, 221 Broad Street, Sumter, is in charge of the arrangements (803) 775-9386.
