Obituary of William H Stevenson, Jr.

William H. Stevenson, Jr., 91, died October 12, 2016 at his home. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen B. Stevenson, who died August 16, 2016. Born September 1, 1925 in White Oak, SC, he was the son of the late Reverend William Hartin Stevenson, Sr. and Rebecca Addison Stevenson. After graduating from Edmunds High School, he graduated from Presbyterian College where he was president of Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity. He received his law degree from Duke University Law School and practiced law for 45 years, mostly in Sumter County. He enlisted in the Marine Corps just out of high school and served in the Pacific for two and one-half years during World War II where he received three Battle Stars for his service. He retired from the United States Army Reserve after thirty years, with the rank of Colonel. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon and Elder. He also served as trustee of Harmony Presbytery. Surviving are his four children, Helen Elizabeth Stevenson, M.D. of Slidell, LA, William H. Stevenson III of Huntsville, AL, David M. Stevenson of New Cumberland, PA and Mary E. Stevenson of Atlanta, GA; five grandchildren, Anthony, Renee, Amy, Ashley and Elise. A private graveside service with the Rev. Nick Cheek officiating will be held Monday at the Sumter Cemetery. The family will receive friends at 60 Bryn Mawr Place. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 9 W.
