Obituary of Mary Alice Cummings
Mary Evans “Mae” Cummings, 89, widow of Carl Epps Cummings, Sr., died Monday, June 5, 2017, at National Healthcare Center.
Born in Sumter, she was the daughter of the late John Linwood Evans and Mildred Boone Evans.
Mae graduated from Edmunds High School and attended Limestone College. She was a former employee of Brody’s Department Store. She was a lifetime member of Trinity United Methodist Church and a former member of the Administrative Board, a kindergarten Sunday school teacher, member of the U.M.W., Circle Leader, and the Fa Ho Lo Sunday School Class.
Mae served her community as a den mother for the Cub Scouts, Brownie and Girl Scouts Leader and was on the Girl Scout Council. She was also a former State Treasurer for the D.A.V. Auxiliary.
She is survived by one son, Carl E. Cummings, Jr. (Mary) of Columbia; three daughters, Lou Hodge Milks (Rick) of High Point, NC, Kathy C. Higginbotham (Milton) of Brentwood, TN, and Lisa C. Galloway (Ron) of Summerfield, FL; six grandchildren, Robb Hodge, Justin Higginbotham, John Higginbotham, Trey Cummings, Cameron Shivers and Lauren Shivers; six great-grandchildren, Timothy Hodge, Alex Hodge, Joshua Hodge, Allison Higginbotham, Matthew Higginbotham, and Emma Higginbotham; two great-great-grandchildren, Levi Hodge and Kenadie Hodge; a dear sister-in-law, Jean Evans; a brother-in-law, Bill Thorne; a devoted caregiver, Janie Williams and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mae was preceded in death by five brothers, Jack, John Marion, William, Warren, and Charles Evans; three sisters, Helen E. Mittell, Lolly E. Thorne and her twin sister, Mildred “Wee” Commins.
Funeral Services will be held at 2 P.M. Thursday at Trinity United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Reginald Thackston and Rev. Lyn Hill officiating.
Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Fa Ho Lo Sunday School class.
The family will receive friends 6 P.M. to 8 P.M. Wednesday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home.
