Dear Betty,
I am sadden by the passing of Richard. While I have not seen him in over 30 years, I did enjoy working with him when I worked at HABS, 1978 to 1981. He was a great delineator and contributed greatly to the HABS/HAER programs.
I pray for your loss and the loss of a HABS alumni. It was a great program in the 1980's.
Sincerely, Richard Cronenberger

Dean and I are so sorry to hear that Richard passed away on June 17th. We are happy, however, to have known and worked with him on several projects in our profession. Richard was a very special person and truly dedicated to his work, which he excelled at. Not only have we lost a kind and good soul but also an accomplished historic preservationist! May he rest in peace.

Dear Betty and Aimee,
My heart is on the ground for you, for Richard and for the world of preservation. I had the great fortune of knowing Richard well, spending time with him and Aimee and having a years-long correspondence with him. I was on hand to observe, and occasionally hold the dumb end of a tape measure, as Richard documented the 1885 Gilded Age schooner, Coronet. Richard stayed with my husband, Michael, and me for many weeks during this process. A more talented, brilliant, accomplished and disciplined person I have never known. As his obituary shows, Richard had ample reason to be proud, even arrogant. But in addition to his superlative skills, Richard was entirely sweet, humble, kind, funny and filled to the brim with powerful, but quiet, joy and love for life. I've never known anyone to match him and I never expect to. Richard wrote me a letter in April that told me about his fatal cancer. His letter was entirely forthright, lacking any self pity and filled with news about Aimee's dragons and Betty's kind support. How perfectly Richardesque - maintaining his loving observations of, and his love for, the world and for his family while facing close and imminent death without the slightest bitterness or fear. He did express regret that he would not get to complete the work he did on Coronet, using a Richard-type strong epithet - "darn". I myself would use much stronger language to mourn the world's loss of a truly great man.
