I'll never forget attending some friday night Sumter football games with him as a child and his love for boiled peanuts. One time he tried to take my cousin Zach and I fishing, and he was so patient with us because we were young and rather impatient! I'm pretty sure we also tossed a lot of lines into the trees instead of into the water. He will be missed by so many, especially his grandchildren. So thankful for the time we had and all the memories he was so intentional about making with us as a family!

I had the privilege of doing my practice teaching under Mr. Matthews at Central Elementary in 1970. He was so well-liked by his staff and kindly offered me a position up on my graduation from Winthrop. My sincere condolences to his family. (Georgetown)
